South Korean director Kim Ki-duk’s oeuvre interweaving dreams and real life Friday created waves at the San Sebastian festival as US actress Meryl Streep was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.

Kim’s “Dream,” an entry for the festival’s Golden Shell for best film and the first South Korean movie to take part in the Spanish festival, explores the critical boundaries between dreams, nightmares and reality.

The film’s protagonist Jin wakes up in the middle of the night after having a nightmare about being involved in a car crash while travelling to his ex-girlfriend’s home.

Unable to shake off the dream, he visits the crash scene only to discover a similar accident has taken place for real and that his nightmares are being played out through a sleepwalking woman, who is identified on security cameras.

When the couple meet they decide to take it in turns to sleep to avoid any other dangerous episodes, but the situation makes them go crazy.

“In the film, the dream represents the past, (while) the memory still haunts people in the present or future,” said Kim Ki-duk via video-link as he recovers from a recent car accident himself.

“I used dreaming and sleepwalking to tell a love story, the biggest subject in the world,” he added.
